The Obama administration-backed Free Syrian Army(FSA) reported on Saturday that two of its top leaders were abducted and then killed by al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorists who now call themselves the Islamist State of Iraq and La Syrie (ISIS).
Le two commanders, Mohammad al-Qadi and Ahmad Jahar, were allegedly captured while leading a convoy from Turkey into Syria with supplies including food and medicine, according to Alarabiya News.
They were said to be last seen at an ISIS camp in the town of Azaz, but later their bodies were found by civilians in the outskirts of Azaz, Syria.
“While the U.S. Commander in Chief Barack Hussein Obama tours the U.S. like a snake-oil salesman pushing Obamacare on people who don’t trust him, al-Qaeda continues to create havoc in the Middle East and Africa,” said Islamic le terrorisme expert and former police task force member Gerald O’Halleran.
For example, this week the Free Syrian Army and its largest contingent known as the Al-Nusra Front managed to take over the Al-Omar oil field in Deir ez-Zor, after a battle with Syrian government forces that lasted several days, according to a report released by Israel’s non-governmental agency (NGO) Meir Amit Information Center, an anti-terrorism think-tank.
Syrian rebels, mostly members of the al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch the Al-Nusra Front, drove a tank with “Al-Omar oil field” written on it, forcing the Syrian government guards to withdraw from the oil field. The rebels then seized seven military tanks and other weapons at the oil field. However, the Syrian government-controlled news media failed to report the invasion and occupation of Syria’s largest oil field.
Une Al-Arabiya reporter noted that by taking over the oil field and the Syrian army base located there, the rebels annexed a larger area in Syria.
The invasion of the Al-Omar oil field, along with the bombing of a major oil refinery caused further damage to the Syrian oil production and exportation, which has been in ruins since the rebellion erupted, according to the American Center for Democracy.
Selon Meir Amit:
“Most of Syria’s oil infrastructure is now in the hands of the rebel organizations, the most prominent of which is the Al-Nusra Front. The Al-Omar oil field, southwest of Deir ez-Zor, is the only field that remained in the hands of the Syrian regime until recently, after it regained control of the field in early 2013. According to the Syrian regime, this field has produced some 20,000 barrels a day. It was reported that in early 2010, the field had a production capacity of some 200,000 barrels a day.”
The takeover of the Al-Omar oil field is the latest step in the process of the Syrian government’s infrastructures being commandeered by the Al-Nusra Front and other Islamist rebel groups, something that is feared throughout the Middle East and among counterterrorism experts.
Assad’s valuable assets that have been taken over by Islamist rebels in northern and eastern Syria include oil and gas fields and pipelines, dams, power plants, and grain silos.
“After taking over these assets, the Al-Nusra Front and other rebel organizations operate them, in several cases after entering into tacit agreements with the Syrian regime [supplying oil and gas to the regime that they are fighting against in return for a fee],” said Meir Amit analysts.
The profits from operating the oil fields garners monthly revenues that help the Islamists finance the payment of salaries, purchase weapons and provide assistance to the population in the so-called liberated territories.

Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,”

The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding
support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s
recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.
dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy
and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the day
to gauge its policy path. The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after
a sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close
at 7.066. Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank
of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band,
at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to
offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar strength, but the currency
has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from expected
fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by
Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
“Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.
Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help further lift China asset sentiment.
Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported,
similar to what happened in Nov.
2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded
trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always
being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight, it also has to be the
most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like
ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access
to airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of
Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote
in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials
which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two
months left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the
airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered a
surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’
the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted
nothing to do with DC’ during the making
of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the
film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe
$150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy
was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence
of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and
a critic score of 32%

Trump enjoys the company of plenty of friends, taking

her. He respects her independence, seeks her input, trusts her keen eye,

I have witnessed their relationship up close, and it is one fundamentally built on mutual love and respect.

When Kyle asked Jackie to clarify what she meant by ‘did her

Despite the raciness of the content he had just read from his daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.
‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.
‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all,
its my daughter we’re talking about. If it was somebody else, it would be a different story altogether.
I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter
between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door,
she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the
living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony
read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw
her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford
Clinic in November in 2022.
During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills
and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

Meanwhile, The Guardian claimed the much-hyped Gotham sequel proved ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive’.
While Daily Mail branded the sequel as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant yet audaciously
different in style from the original.
Brian Vine wrote: ‘For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights,
it is still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off.

was to take standards and find a way that was

There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch Bowl Inn.
Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is well kept and
a huge leather sofa sits before a blazing wood
burner; or in the dining room, solid and comfortable, with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and
tables unadorned with cloths; it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr,
that makes full use of the magnificent local Lake
District larder.

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm,
who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County Show;
also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something
of a legend around these parts. But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs
Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the
world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.
A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and
a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by
assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce
just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked
with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched
in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies;
by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is famed for its damsons);
along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and
a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start. But first, another bottle of wine.
Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Briton Matthew Smith, the partner of former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Michael

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal
court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.
Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer James Jacobson allegedly
used a “casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.
After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith
was held in custody in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island, to the east of New York City.
Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what
appeared to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith, Jeffries and Jacobson.
Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late October.
Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to 2014, is accused of creating and maintaining
a ring that recruited young men to have sex with him and Smith.
Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March 2015
Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of “force, fraud and coercion” to traffic men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.
Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest the scale was probably much larger and
have appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.
Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and Smith and to
hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.
Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as
the other defendants and was released on half a million dollars bond
in October.

The star said he had yet to see the panned Joker sequel,
saying: ‘I was shocked too as the first Joker film I loved,

Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated
blood fest, which has received a 78-percent rating
from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have
‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.
The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The
Numbers.
Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box office competition during its debut weekend could not overcome the bad reviews, enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.
The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four thousand theaters across the
US.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong
and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home
viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has
grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of
release.

Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades,
was the perfect place to unveil Joker five years ago; and
last month, at the venerable film festival there, it was
followed by the sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux.
The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the
title role, this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I
suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.
We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but she
really is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her
at St Trinian’s.
This film is audaciously different in style from the original, not as electrifying, but bold
and brilliant all the same.
Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity
status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic
Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band
Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to
their prison wing.
The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet
Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver skilfully toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which
way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling

For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while
this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about mental illness;
not quite comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and One
Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off.
– Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.
The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing
story, splendidly written and directed by Aaron Schimberg,
about an urban loner struggling with life.
In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward
(Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s apparently
because he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos seem to be about as far as he can get in the acting world.
There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and for that matter of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character,
a former movie star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming into her own younger
self.

Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented itself’.
In other words, medical science has found a way to reverse his condition, turning him into a
perfectly attractive middle-aged man.
But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is that Edward, despite his radical
change in appearance, is still the same person underneath that he
always was.
In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve),
a playwright. Now he is able to fall into bed with her, and to star
in a play she has written about their relationship,
little though she knows of his real identity.
I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993) as Edward’s new persona
fundamentally fails to alter who he actually is. This is
illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with the
same condition Edward once had, but popular,
witty, confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer from a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).
Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The Skin (2013).
Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about what’s under the skin.

It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller — in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.

Joy, the story of the three brilliant British
medical pioneers whose work on IVF led to the world’s first ‘test-tube’
baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

and Stanley Tucci. A couple of new documentaries catch the eye, too.
One of them is made by actress Sadie Frost, whose directing debut was a film about Mary Quant.
This time she turns to another fashion icon of the 1960s, with a feature called
Twiggy.
And Elton John: Never Too Late promises a ‘uniquely intimate’ look at the star’s life and career.
It’s been made by his long-time partner David Furnish, so… we’ll see.

Spanish police are refusing to say whether they have recovered
a £12,000 Rolex watch Jay Slater allegedly stole before his death.
The Civil Guard in Tenerife confirmed today the body found in a ravine near the village of Masca was his, and said
all indications pointed to him dying in an accidental fall.
However, authorities have refused to say whether he was found with a luxury timepiece he had allegedly bragged about stealing from a fellow
reveller.
Jay’s injuries included broken bones, according to a statement released shortly after
court officials also revealed his identity had been confirmed with fingerprinting.
They had initially claimed full identification wouldn’t happen till ‘next week’ because the body was ‘very deteriorated.’
Questions remain as to whether police have a watch the 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer reportedly confessed
to stealing from a reveller during an altercation outside Papagayo
Beach Club near his holiday accommodation.
The precise location where police mountain rescue experts found Jay at around 10am on Monday also remains a mystery.

Jay Slater suffered broken bones when he ‘plunged to his
death’, preliminary autopsy reveals – as his ‘heartbroken’ mother says she ‘cannot believe this could happen to my beautiful boy’
Spanish police have never confirmed whether they are investigating the theft of a watch.
A preliminary autopsy has suggested Jay, from Oswaldtwistle near Blackburn, died
after falling from a large height.
His mother Debbie Duncan said: ‘The worst news. I just can’t believe this could
happen to my beautiful boy. Our hearts are broken.’
A Civil Guard spokeswoman said earlier: ‘The body of
the man located yesterday has been identified as that of Jay Slater’s
through fingerprint comparison and identification.
‘The result of the preliminary autopsy points to the cause of death being
a fall or plunge from height due to the broken bones he suffered.’
Earlier in the day court officials in Tenerife
had released the first confirmation the body discovered was Jay’s despite claiming initially they thought it would take up to a week to get a positive ID.
The Canary Islands’ High Court of Justice said in an official statement just
before 2pm today local time: ‘Court of Instruction Number One in Icod de los Vinos can confirm that through fingerprints the body has been identified as that of Jay Slater.
‘The autopsy has determined that his death was the result of multiple injuries
compatible with a fall in a rocky area.’
The 29-day search for apprentice bricklayer Jay came to an end
yesterday around 10am. A helicopter was called in to
recover his body.
The large-scale police search in the mountains near Masca had been suspended around two weeks after
he disappeared on June 17, but mountain rescue police specialists had
continued with a smaller search on a daily basis.
Civil Guard sources have indicated there are no current plans to facilitate a new press conference with Cipriano Martin, the head of the Civil Guard’s Greim
mountain rescue unit.
Mr Martin had addressed the media shortly before the large-scale mountain search for Jay
was officially suspended on June 30.
