A staggering 34.3 tons of fentanyl have been intercepted at the U.S. southern border since President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took office, according to a recent report released by the Republican National Committee (RNC). Using data from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the RNC highlighted the scale of the fentanyl crisis, noting that the quantity seized is enough to kill more than the entire global population.

The report underscores the gravity of the synthetic opioid threat, which is up to 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. As per the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, just two milligrams of fentanyl—the equivalent of about 10 grains of salt—constitutes a lethal dose.

Data from the CBP, which has been systematically tracking drug seizures since the start of fiscal year 2021, indicates that approximately 37.4 tons of fentanyl have been seized over the last four fiscal years, as reported by the CBP. According to the RNC’s analysis, this quantity of fentanyl could potentially result in 15.6 billion lethal doses, a grim measure of the danger posed by this potent drug.

In September alone, fentanyl seizures amounted to around 491 million lethal doses, highlighting the scale of the ongoing battle at the border. The synthetic opioid crisis continues to take a devastating toll within the United States, with one person succumbing to a fentanyl overdose every seven minutes, as reported by the Washington Post. The number of deaths due to fentanyl has surged by 94 percent since 2019.

Anne Milgram, the DEA administrator appointed during the Biden-Harris administration, has openly acknowledged the severity of the crisis. She described the situation as unprecedented, stating that drug cartels are “killing Americans with fentanyl at catastrophic and record rates like we’ve never seen before.”

The influx of fentanyl has placed considerable strain on the U.S. public health system and has fueled political debates surrounding border security and drug enforcement policies. The RNC has criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the border crisis, attributing the influx of illegal substances, including fentanyl, to policies they claim have exacerbated the situation.

With the 2024 presidential election approaching, the fentanyl crisis is likely to remain a central issue in political discussions, as policymakers grapple with how best to curb the influx of this dangerous drug while addressing the broader challenges posed by the southern border. The Biden-Harris administration faces pressure from both sides of the aisle to implement stronger measures to tackle the trafficking of fentanyl and protect American lives.
